Nitrate is produced by the breakdown of toxic nitrite by the bacteria in your filter and will accumulate in the aquarium. Nitrate is toxic to delicate marine creatures and must be kept at a low level. Delicate freshwater fish do not thrive in nitrate levels higher than 25mg/l, and above 75mg/l , algea growth may cause problems.
