Double/triple glazing or, generally, insulated glazing, refers to the double, respectively, triple glass window panes separated by a space filled with air or different other kinds of gas like argon in order to reduce the nuisances of heat transfer.
The piece that separates the glass panes in an insulated glazing window is known as spacer. A spacer seals the gas contained in between the panes of glass and was initially made of fibre or metal because these supposedly ensured better durability. Metal spacers are not the optimum choice when making uPVC windows because, unless this material is thermally improved, it does promote condensation and the formation of ice at the bottom of the unit due to the significant difference in temperature between the surrounding air and the window.
Less-conductive materials are more suitable in making insulated glazing spacers, enhancing thermal performance, improving insulation and minimizing the chances of condensation. Such materials include structural foam or aluminium that has a potent thermal barrier integrated within its structure.
